ADAMS COUNTY
Adams County saw a lot of settlers move into the area after the completion of the Erie Canal in New York. Many of the first settlers were Swiss Amish who still comprise about a quarter of the population of Adams County. Adams County has two towns named after Swiss cities, Berne and Geneva. Gene Stratton-Porter, an author and naturalist, lived in Geneva at the Limberlost Cabin. Berne farmers donated land for a train depot in order to entice a railroad to build to Berne. Their plan worked, allowing Berne farmers to more easily get their goods to market. The county seat, Decatur, is the largest city in Adams County and home to the Peace Monument, the first monument in the nation devoted to peace.
