WABASH COUNTY

The name Wabash is a derivation of a similar Native American word for the river.  Wabash, the county seat, is home to the Paradise Spring Treaty Grounds, where the United States signed a treaty with the Potawatomi and Miami tribes in 1826.  The Wabash and Erie Canal, the longest canal built in the United States, running from Lake Erie to the Ohio River ran through Wabash and brought many of the state’s earliest settlers.  One of the first forms of electric light illuminated the Courthouse in 1880, making Wabash one of the first cities in the world to be electrically illuminated.
