WHITLEY COUNTY

With the completion of the Erie Canal in New York, and the recent military wins driving the Native Americans across the Mississippi River, settlers started moving west into Indiana, with some of the first settlers in Whitley County arriving in 1835.  Columbia City, the county seat, is the most populous city in Whitley. However, South Whitley is known as the bed race capital of the United States. Additionally, if you visit Churubusco, beware of the Beast of Busco - Oscar the Turtle - an elusive turtle that terrorises the residents near the headwaters of the Eel River.
