DELAWARE COUNTY

Delaware County is home to Muncie and Ball State University.  The county takes its name from the Delaware, a native american tribe, which had settled on the banks of the White River.  Delaware County is where the first natural gas well was drilled - the odor was so foul smelling that the drillers believed they had dug into the ceiling of Hell itself!  Muncie was a crossroads of many different railroads in an economic boom that occurred after the Civil War. With all of the former railroad right-of-ways, and demand from Ball State students, many trails now criss-cross Muncie.
