DEARBORN COUNTY

Dearborn County was once a much larger county and previously part of Ohio.  Since then, it was granted to the Indiana Territory, and pared down to create other counties.  One of the last was when Rising Sun was competing with Lawrenceburg to become the county seat. The state legislature cut the county in half and gave each town their own county!  The formation of Lawrenceburg predates the state as trading had built up along the Ohio River. Additionally, Lawrenceburg is home to one of the largest whiskey distilleries in the nation.  Aurora, Lawrenceburg’s southern neighbor along the Ohio River, is named after the Roman goddess of dawn.
