Walking the Indianapolis 2012 Super Bowl
Super Bowl Walkers.
We at the Hoosier Rails to Trails Council welcome you to Indianapolis.
While here, we encourage you to walk around our downtown, both to get some easy exercise and to explore some of our history.
To help you, we are providing this information to read, and some routes to walk.
Walking downtown is easy, as all but five streets are laid out in a grid of north-south and east-west streets, formed outward from Monument Circle, which is the center of both Indianapolis, and Indiana. The four border streets, of the original 1821 Mile Square plat set a half mile from Monument Circle are North Street, and then South, East, and West Streets. The grid and same street names extend well beyond these streets, many of which have state names.
The four diagonal streets are Indiana Avenue, hosting much black heritage, to the northwest, Massachusettes Avenue, hosting an arts, German, and gay culture, to the northeast, Virginia Avenue, hosting arts, Italian, and redevelopment southeastwardly extending to the Fountain Square neighborhood, and Kentucky Avenue, which is mostly industrial, to the southwest. Lastly, Fort Wayne Ave, which borders St. Joseph Neighborhood, hosts residential, retail, commercial, and social businesses, all well to the north and east of the Mile Square.
The six walking loops are the White River Loop, the Zoo Loop, the Mile Square Loop, the Cultural Trail – Legacy of Eugene and Marilyn Glick - Loop, the Canal and Capital Avenue Loop, and the Washington St - Market St Loop. None is marked with street signs, only on this map at www.indianatrails.com. Each loop highlights some combination of urban scenes, historic buildings, and heritage sites, many of which are noted – and explained - on this webmap.
