Pufferbelly Trail / Ymca Salomon Farm Park Trail

Fort Wayne

 October 22, 2015

Fort Wayne Trails celebrated the opening of its 1.6 mile expansion with a ceremony and ribbon cutting at the Life Bridge Church Trailhead, 12719 Corbin Rd, Fort Wayne, a gift from donor Mark Deister.

Fort Wayne Trails, along with the Indiana DNR, Life Bridge Church, City of Fort Wayne, the Indiana Trails Fund, Allen County and over 25 other donors and donor organization contributed to this expansion.

Mayor Tom Henry helped open the new section of the Pufferbelly Trail, foreseeing the trails eventual extension northwardly to the Michigan State Line toward the City of Angola and southwardly to the City of Bluffton in Wells County.
He did remind the crowd that the projected expansion will not happen overnight, but that it will happen.

Lori Rose, Executive Director of Ft. Wayne Trails, thanked everyone who has been involved in this trail, especially long time advocates. Allen County Commissioners Theresa Brown and Mr. F. Nelson Peters were on hand for the celebration as well as Dawn Richie, head of Ft. Wayne Parks and Recreation, Bob Bronson, DNR, also attended and thanked everyone for their help in completing the trail extension.
Life Bridge Church provided refreshments to the many attendees of the ribbon cutting ceremony, cut short due to rain.

The one and quarter of mile north extension of the Pufferbelly Trail in Fort Wayne, Indiana is just another step in a very ambitious project that will connect Fort Wayne’s downtown to the county line north. Dawn Ritchie, Greenways Manager, explains in detail the articulated plan which consists of buying lands, building under highways and bridges, and crossing streets and highways, which will also connect highly populated areas with commercial centers and other important trails. Once completed it will be the north ray of the sunburst trail system in Fort Wayne making connections in all directions with the downtown.
Hoosiers can take pride along with Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry in planning and implementing one of the best urban trail systems in Indiana.
