Descriptions:
The Cool Creek Park is located in Westfield , Indiana, which is just north of Indianapolis . Cool Creek is a 90-acre facility and includes four miles of well-marked trails, from nature-type paths to paved roads which wind through the scenic park and which will accommodate bicyclists, hikers, runners, roller blading, and they are accessible as well.
The Beech Trail is a one mile paved surface, and the Tulip Trail is 1½ miles, also paved and accessible. These two connect with many dirt pathways extending further into the park. All of these trails, paved, gravel, or dirt, are well-maintained and fairly flat. Cool Creek Park also connects to Natalie Wheeler Trail (see description on Indianatrails.com) which can take you to downtown Westfield . Eventually, the future plans for trail development will have links to the east-west Midland Trace Trail and to the major north-south Monon Trail that travels through Indianapolis and points north.
Overall landscape in Cool Creek Park includes wooded tracts, creekside riparian habitat, also restored prairie with native plants such as coneflower and prairie grasses. In addition, there are some boardwalks as well as bridges on the hike and bike ways that overlook Cool Creek. The park is an important birding site at which, according the Center for Earth and Environmental Sciences at Indiana and Purdue Universities , over 160 avian species have been found so far. The park’s nature pathways are excellent for participating in this activity.
Before or after a hike, keep in mind the park includes an outdoor music pavilion which provides summer concerts. Cool Creek has a nature center, too, offering hands-on learning stations, aquariums with native frogs and snake exhibits, hikes, and other family activities. For example, the park hosts “Haunted Trails” in Halloween season with hayrides and campfires.
Other offerings of Cool Creek Park to take advantage of are picnic facilities, rest shelters, grills, plenty of parking, and restrooms when needed.
